Paddling

Bennett-Jody and Bob Luoma.GIF (1179514 bytes) Inland lakes and gentle rivers:
Morning paddles. Meet at 9:45 (or earlier) to be on water by 10:00 AM.  New to the sport? Need help with boat unloading? We especially encourage beginners, but all are welcome to join. PDF's required. We'll paddle for about 1.5 to 2 hrs. and then go out to lunch.

These are beginner paddles, so we will cancel if bad weather is a possibility.

Be sure to call us to sign up so we can send directions or notify you in case of cancellation. Jody Bennett and Bob Luoma,  231-932-9249, bennettjj@charter.net.

Tuesday, June 22 – Pearl Lake

Paddle this small, peaceful lake that is only developed on the north shore. Eagles, osprey, and loons nest here and can usually be spotted.

Directions: From Tom's West Bay: Take 72 west for approx. 14 miles. Where 72 turns north, you turn south (left). That will be CR 669/Coleman Rd. After about 1 mile turn west (right) on Oviatt/Pettengill Rd. Go about 1 mile and turn south (left) on Pearl Lake Rd. It might also have a sign for the boat access. Go about 1 mile and turn east (left) on Wagner Rd. The access site is about 100 feet on right. It's easy to pass because there are driveways close by.

If you are coming from the south on CR 669, turn west on to Wagner Rd. There's a little more dirt road this way, but it's the shortest route to get there if you're heading north on 669.

Note: There is no 'official' potty at this site, but there are lots of trees. Poison ivy too, so you’ll need to be watchful. This is a small lake that usually provides glimpses of eagles and loons.

Friday, July 23 – Boardman River, Hull Park

Join us as we paddle under the TART pedestrian bridge and the Eighth Street bridge, pass by apartments and condos, and meander our way to Union Street Dam (the stalwart structure that keeps invasive species out of the rest of the river). We’ll also venture forth into Boardman Lake and paddle down to Auntie Pasta’s for lunch if it’s not too windy. After lunch we’ll paddle back to the launch site. You’ll have the option to skip the lunch paddle portion and go back to Hull Park as we come back out of the river.

Directions: Hull Park is behind the TC Library on Woodmere. Turn west (right) at the traffic light immediately south of the library (Hannah St.). You should be able to see the clubhouse/launch area from there.

Thursday, August 26 – Lake Dubonnet

Enjoy this man-made lake created many years ago for flood control. It is almost undeveloped and has patches of standing dead trees in which various birds (including raptors) perch and nest, and there are several islands, including one that floats. Not sure which one it is. Perhaps we can figure it out.

Directions: From the main 'four corners' in Interlochen, go west on US 31 about 1.5 miles to Gonder Road (just past Interlochen Golf Club on the right). Turn north (right) onto Gonder. Go about 1 miles until the road curves to the right, but go straight on to the dirt road. Go about .8 miles on the dirt road and turn right just before the campground registration building. The launch site is about 100 yards past the turn.

Tuesday, September 14 – Boardman River by YMCA

Paddle a short segment of the river that will be much livelier when the dams are removed. We’ll go upstream (not much current) to the Sabin Dam and then return.

Directions: Turn south off Airport Rd. onto Racquet Club Drive (it’s across from Logan’s Landing). Follow the road back to the YMCA parking lot. If there is no activity, we can drive across the lawn to the put-in area to unload. If we can’t do this, we’ll park in the lot and carry the boats approximately 100 yards to the river.
