Saturday, October 13, 2007 11:00 AM High Banks Rollway - See Photos-Highbanks Rollway. Directions to trail head: Take Garfield Rd. to Kingsley. Go straight south after stop at M113 (if going east on M113 go right at the blinker) and turn right on Fenton Road. Turn left at Blackman Rd. Go to dead end at County Line Rd. and turn right. When pavement takes a sharp right , see Scenic Overlook sign on left side. Follow the dirt road. When you come to a Y, go to the left, then meander south and east (stay on mainly used road). You will come to a sign for Overlook Parking lot (1.4 miles from pavement). To get there from Buckley, go east at the light until you dead end at No.17 Rd. Turn right. Go to No. 4 Rd. Turn left and stay on this til sharp left. See Scenic Overlook sign straight ahead.
The September Walk will take place on September 8th and we will be walking the Kehl Lake Natural Area in the Leelanau Peninsula. This area, part of the Leelanau Conservancy, consists of 180 acres of old growth white pine, hemlock and hardwoods as well as pristine wetlands. An ancient Native American campsite is just off the trail. There are 2 miles of easily hiked paths and the Conservancy recommends hiking boots be worn. Kehl Lake itself features over 1800 feet of undeveloped shoreline with abundant wildlife. Directions: Take M-22 north towards Northport. Just south of Northport M-22 ends and M-201 begins. Take 201 thru Northport. At 1.5 miles 201 ends and CR 640 begins as you follow the curve to the right. Follow 640 for a mile to Snyder Road and turn left. After .5 miles turn right on Sugarbush Road. After .7 miles is the corner of Kehl and Otis. Go straight on Kehl for .2 miles to the Conservancy sign and parking on the left. See you all at 11:00 on the 8th. Lunch for those interested will be in Northport.
