Because November is a “tweener” month – too cold for summer hiking and too early for snow – we typically don’t offer a hike or a snowshoe event. But this year we’ve decided to embrace the idea that it’s fun and healthy to hike year-round.
Consequently, we’ve scheduled a hike for Wednesday, November 10, at 10 a.m. on the Boardman Lake Loop Trail, the trail that TART expects to be completed next July. We’ll meet on Hannah Avenue, just south of the library and the Filling Station. To get there, take Woodmere Avenue to Hannah and then follow Hannah to the Sailing Club. There is ample parking on Hannah.
We are going to start our event with a presentation by our very own Newcomer, Tony Hoholik. He will talk about and demonstrate gear that is useful for walking/hiking in slippery, wet or snowy conditions or on more challenging terrain. He will cover hiking aides that attach to your boot, including different types of cleats and snowshoes as well as a few pointers on walking poles or sticks.
After the presentation, we’ll hike around Boardman Lake. Most of the loop trail, which is paved and mostly flat, has been completed. There is a short section next to the NMC campus on Cass Road where we will leave the paved trail. The hike is about five miles long and is rated as easy.
After the hike, we’ll gather at the Filling Station or another nearby restaurant for food and drinks. More on this as we get closer to the event.
There is no cost for this event, but registration through the Newcomers website is required. Please join us!
