Nature Stewards -Trail Building in Traverse City

Ask any local which trails they use most often, and they’re likely to talk about the Grand Traverse Commons or Hickory Meadows. These beloved trails are less than 1 mile apart as the crow flies but have never been connected due to private property between the two natural areas. Thanks to a partnership with TART Trails, the Grand Traverse Regional Land Conservancy, and the generosity of the Oleson’s family, we now have the opportunity to connect these properties with a multi-use, singletrack trail! Join us for a morning of trail building and be part of Traverse City history.

The Basics:
We will teach you everything you need to know about tool use, safety, trail building, and maintenance. No prior experience is necessary! This event will be strenuous, with participants hiking up to 4 miles on uneven terrain and swinging hefty trail tools.

The Conservancy follows state, federal and CDC guidelines for COVID-19 and may modify or cancel this event at any time. Do not participate in any activity if you were recently exposed (within 10 days) to someone with COVID-19, have recently (within 10 days) been diagnosed with COVID-19, or have experienced ANY of the following symptoms in the past 24 hours:

  • Sore throat

  • Fever

  • New or worsening cough

  • Shortness of breath

  • Vomiting/diarrhea

  • Shaking/chills

  • Loss of taste or smell

  • Muscle pain

What volunteers will do:

  • Clear the trail corridor with loppers, handsaws, and rakes

  • Establish the trail bed with hand tools

  • Finishing touches including compaction, sign installation, and more

What should I bring?

  • Dress for the weather! Always check the forecast in advance

  • Sturdy, closed-toe shoes that can handle some mud

  • Bring a reusable water bottle and some snacks

  • Sunscreen and bug spray for your safety and comfort

  • Your favorite pair of work gloves

Directions:

We will be meeting at the Oleson’s grocery store plaza at 3860 N Long Lake Rd, Traverse City, 49684. Attendees should pull around the back of the building and park along the brick retaining wall.
