Newcomers Bike Ride #5 (Thursday, September 3rd) – Betsie Valley Trail, from Beulah to Frankfort
Overview: This 20 mile out and back ride will start in Beulah at the Beulah Trailhead and Visitors Center, and will head to Frankfort. The ride will start at 10:00am so please arrive at the parking lot by 9:45am. The trail is hard-packed crushed gravel along Crystal Lake (about 4 miles, see picture below) and then turns to pavement for the last 6 miles to Frankfort. Most of the ride is along the Betsie River Nature Area and Crystal Lake, probably the most scenic bike trail in the area.
Meeting Time and Location – Meet at the Beulah Trailhead and Visitors Center at the corner of Crystal Avenue and S. Benzie Blvd. Parking available on Lake St (200 feet northwest of the Visitor Center). Restrooms at the Visitor Center. (Note: The Google Map Link shown is for a building right next to the Beulah Trailhead and Visitor Center since there isn't a numbered street address for the old depot building).
The Ride: All riders will ride west from the Trailhead and Visitor Center by crossing S. Benzie Blvd and picking up the gravel trail that runs along Crystal Avenue. After the first 4 miles, the trail crosses Michigan Route 115 (look for fast traffic coming from both directions) and turns to pavement. The route then runs alongside the Betsie River State Game Area. Recommend tires that are at least 28 mm wide for the gravel. All riders should turn around at the Frankfort Marina.
Lunch: Five Shores Brewing (163 S. Benzie Blvd, Beulah). Five Shores Brewing opens at Noon. All riders should aim to finish at the parking lot by Noon. It is a 300 yard walk from the Visitor Center to Five Shores Brewing.
